I've finished writing Lilacs in Spring, Joan is now working on it. It's getting more and more exciting to see all pieces come together. The 4 designs you see on the pic are ready to publish, still 2 to go, Autumn Leaves is written but not yet photographed, and the last one I need to graft and block....and write....and photograph it nicely. Well lots of fun work to do. Oh and don't forget, also need to fight with the lay-out and PDF properties :(

Ik ben klaar met Lilacs In Spring, Joan mag er nu mee spelen :) Het wordt steeds leuker om alle stukjes bij elkaar te zien komen. De 4 patronen op de foto zijn klaar voor publicatie, Autumn Leaves moet nog gefotografeerd worden. En de laatste moet nog gemaasd en geblocked worden...en geschreven...en gefotografeerd. Nou, genoeg werk te doen dacht ik zo. Oh en vooral niet het gevecht vergeten met lay-out en PDF standaarden :(

Decreases / Minderingen

And it's my brothers birthday today, so DB if you finally having time to read my blog ; happy birthday! There were some questions on what kind of decreases you can make and wether it makes any difference which one you choose. sometimes is doesn't really mather and then it's just a question which one you find more appealing. for instance in the waist shaping of a sweater. But when your knitting lace it's, at least to me, important, it gives your lace a sense of direction. I played with paint to show youwhat I mean. I'll try to blog some more tomorrow, now it's time to knit!!

En vandaag is mijn broer jarig, dus lief broertje als je eindelijk eens tijd hebt gevonden om mijn blog te lezen: van harte gefeliciteerd!! vandaag waren er wat vragen over welke minderingen je allemaal kunt maken en of het uitmaakt wat voor soort minderingen je gebruikt. Soms maakt het niks uit en is het meer een geval welke mindering jij mooi vindt, bijvoorbeeld in een taillering van een trui. Maar als je kant/ajour breit is het wel belangrijk, tenminste voor mij. Het geeft je ajourwerk een gevoel van richting. Ik heb ff wat gespeeld met paint om te laten zien wat ik bedoel. Ik probeer er morgen wat meer over te bloggen, nu is het tijd om te breien!

Just some nagging / gewoon wat gezever

One of the questions that i've been asked a lot is, how the hell do you come up with all the ideas for your designs? Well in fact that is the easiest part of designing for me, I think I have 4 or 5 notebooks full of sketches, ideas, and little notes. Ideas pop up in my head and even if I don't want that they still do. It's impossible to stop, but when I write them down, I have some more clearity in my head, at least for a little while. :-) What I find to be very difficult is; what to do next? Do I start already with the summer designs or should I first make another winter design? And what design will I do first? Sometimes my enthousiasm runs this whole design show, and I will end up with a summer dress in February :-) And my red cabled sweater, far more suitable for February, is still on the needles and I did not even finish the back yet. :-) The cowl for my brother is not finished either, but at least that pattern is fully written and charted. Where can I find more time to knit? I have so much designs just lying around....... Last monday I went to a fair only for retailers, And yes I did order a lot of Rowan yarn :-) So here's my planning for the next few months, I don't know whether I'll keep it but a girl needs to try :-)

Besides my knitting and pattern writing, I have to do a lot of other work, like working on the website, that has to be up-to-date when Knitty Spring Issue goes live. I thought that I had another month that it would go live in April, but....my mistake it goes live in March....... So I'm of to my website......Damn....When can I go knit something.....

Een van de vragen die ik vaak krijg is; hoe verzin je al die ontwerpen in godsnaam? Eigenlijk is dat het meest makkelijke van ontwerpen voor mij, ik heb denk ik wel 4 of 5 boeken vol met ideeen, schetsen en notities. De ideeen komen zonder dat ik er iets voor hoef te doen, zelfs al zou ik het willen, het is niet iets wat ik kan afzetten. Het helpt om het op te schrijven, dan heb ik heel even wat meer rust in mijn hoofd. :-) Wat ik moeilijk vind; wat komt hierna? Begin ik alvast met zomermodellen of ontwerp ik nog iets voor de winter? En aan welk ontwerp begin ik dan eerst? Soms staat mijn enthousiasme een beetje in de weg, en dan heb je dus een zomerjurkje in Februari, terwijl mijn rode kabeltrui, veel logischer voor Februari, nog steeds halverwege het rugpand is. Net zoals het colletje voor mijn broer, behalve dat dat patroon tenminste al volledig is geschreven en de teltekeningen ook al klaar zijn. Waar zou ik aan meer tijd kunnen komen om te breien? Ik heb nog zoveel ontwerpen liggen....Afgelopen maandag ben ik naar de beurs in Arnhem geweest, en ja daar heb ik natuurlijk weer een hoop mooie nieuwe Rowan garens besteld. Dus hier komt mijn planning voor de komende maanden. Ik weet nog niet of ik het allemaal ga redden, maar ik moet het in ieder geval proberen :-)

Buiten het ontwerpen en breien, zijn er natuurlijk ook nog andere dingen die moeten gebeuren zoals de website bijhouden. De website moet up to date zijn als Het lente nummer van Knitty live gaat. Ik dacht dus dat dat in April was, maar kwam er dus maandag achter dat het al in maart is......dus ik ga nu maar aan mijn website werken.......Godver..... Wanneer heb ik nou eens tijd om te breien!!!!

Ontwerpen: hoeveel meter heb ik nodig? / Designing: how much yardage do I need?

Om uit te reken hoeveel meter je nodig hebt voor het ontwerp moet je weten hoeveel garen je gebruikt voor 1 toer/naald.

Voor 1 toer in tricotsteek gebruik ik ong 3.75 keer de lengte van de breedte van het pand, om een beetje aan de veilige kant te zitten vermenigvuldig ik met 4.

**Voorpand**
Als de breedte van het voorpand 48 cm is dan gebruik ik 48x4=192 cm per toer. dit getal moet je dan vermenigvuldigen met het aantal toeren dan er gebreid moet worden, zeg 120 toeren, dan wordt het 120x192=23040 cm voor het voorpand.

**Achterpand**

Is hetzelfde als voor het voorpand

**Mouw 1**

Boordwijdte is 24 cm en het totale aantal toeren is 90, dus 24x4=96 cm, het totale aantal cm wordt dan 96x90=8640 cm

**Mouw 2**

Bovenkant mouw is 40 cm het aantal toeren is nog steeds 90, dus 40x4=160cm het totale aantal cm wordt dan 160x90=14400cm

Dus nu heb je 23040+23040+8640+14400=69120 cm delen door 100 zodat je het in meters hebt
Dus dit ontwerp heeft 692 meters om het volledig te maken. Stel dat je een garen hebt van 85m/50gr Dan heb je nodig 692:85=8,14 bollen (9)

Op deze manier zijn gewone boordjes inclusief, wil je een grote col, zakken of een muts, dan pak je het breedste punt in cm vermenigvuldig dat met 4 en die uitkomst vermenigvuldig je weer met het aantal toeren

Als je wat kabeltjes gebuikt vermenigvuldig dan met 4,5
Als je veel kabels of ajour gebruikt vermenigvuldig dan met 5
Werk je met dubbele of driedubbele draad, verdubbel of verdriedubbel je aantal meters

Om een beetje speling te hebben voor proeflapjes e.d. tel ik er vaak 5-10% bij op

Als toegift heb ik net en programma geschreven die dit allemaal automatisch doet, ik moet alleen even overleggen met Max hoe ik dit het beste op de site kan zetten. Dus nog even geduld ik zie 'm dinsdag.

The following is in cm cause I'm a metric girl:-)

So how to estimate your yardage/meters for a garment
For 1 row in stockinette stitch I use about 3.75 times the width of the garment, but to be on the save side I usualy use multiply with 4.

**Front**
So if the chest widht is 48 cm I use 48x4= 192 cm per row. Then you have to multply this number with the garments row total say 120 rows till the shoulders that's 120x192=23040 cm for the front

**Back**
Is the same number as front

**Sleeve 1**
wrist width is 24cm total rows is 90 so 24x4= 96 cm total cm is 96x90=8640 cm

**Sleeve 2**
largest width is 40 cm total rows is still 90 so 40x4=160 cm total cm is 160x90=14400cm

So now you you have 23040+23040+8640+14400=69120 cm
Devide by 100 to get meters

So this size will take 692 meters to complete.Say you have a yarn that's 85m/50gr that will be 692:85=8,14 balls (9)

The normal neck ribbing is included in this math. If you like to add a hood, pockets or a large collar: Take the widest point in cm and multiple it with 4. Multiply the outcome with the number of rows.

If you are using some cables multiply with 4,5
If you are using a lot of cables or lace multiply with 5
If you are using multiple strands of yarn you have to dubble or tripple the yardage/meters.
To have some leverage I always add 5-10% for gauge swatching and so on

I just wrote a little program, which does it full automatic, I just have to talk to Max how I can put it on my website. So be patient I'm seeing him on Tuesday.
